Flyers around Gainesville

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

I made a visit to Gainesville last weekend. Since it’s the end of the semester, many students will be graduating and leaving UF forever. I wanted to try to get the word out about the Sledd Society before they leave campus. So I printed up some quick flyers and posted them around town. It wasn’t a huge publicity campaign, and the designs won’t win any awards, but I figured it’s better than nothing. Maybe somebody will see them.

Here they are:

Hopefully in time for the next commencement, we’ll have someone make a nicer design, and put up plenty around campus and environs.

Group on GNN

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

I’ve created a Sledd Society group on Gator Nation Network. Join it here (you may have to log in). It’s free to create a GNN account if you don’t have one.

Here’s the profile on Facebook.

I’ve also emailed several people and asked them to spread the word, post it to a mailing list, announce it a meeting, etc. I’ve posted on several relevant Facebook groups I was a member of, and sent it to many of my friends.

I’ll be in Gainesville this weekend, and hope to print some flyers and post them around town. Commencement is the following week, so hopefully some alumni-to-be will notice the flyers and check out the Web site.

If you haven’t yet, please join the mailing list. And tell a friend. Thanks!

Announcing the Sledd Society

Monday, April 21st, 2008

This is the first public announcement of the Sledd Society: University of Florida Alumni for Social Responsibility.

I’ve been thinking about this for a few months, going back to the student-led Responsible Endowment Coalition. I thought, “There ought to be an avenue for concerned alumni to add their voice to discussions like these.” So: here it is.

This is a very basic launch: just some introductory information and a mailing list. My main goal was to get something in place before the current class graduates and scatters. I hope to get the word out quickly; it won’t be long before everyone is consumed with finals, and then with commencement.

In the future, I hope to get more information on this Web site. I also hope to establish a presence on Facebook and Gator Nation Network. I’d like to work with the Alumni Association or the Gator Clubs to spread the word to interested alumni, maybe via their mailing lists or newsletters. I’m also hoping to get some press coverage, such as in the Alligator and the Iguana. In the future, I’d like to have a push a month or two prior to every graduation to catch students as they graduate.

At some point, I’d also like to find any descendants of President Sledd and let them know about the group. I expect they’d be pleased to see their relative memorialized in this way, but I’d like to inform them out of courtesy regardless.

Anyone interested in being involved should email me. I plan to sketch some ideas for activities, and will share those with anyone interested. At some point, I’d like to have a conference call to discuss a structure for making decisions. The goal is to offer members many opportunities to be involved, so the group will be open and participatory. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or ideas.

Best wishes,

Gavin Baker

A better UF. A better world.

P.S. If you haven’t already, be sure to sign up for our mailing list. This will be the primary way we keep in touch with members. Thanks!
